Ashita No Kita Yoshio

Ashita No Kita Yoshio.

I’ve been incredibly busy recently but I’ve managed to watch the entire series of the Japanese drama, ‘Ashita No Kita Yoshio‘ (Kita Yoshio’s Tomorrow) whilst I took a break to eat. It’s the third ever drama that I’ve watched from Japan. The first being ‘Densha Otako‘ (Train Man) and the second ‘Yama Onna Kaba Onna‘ (Mountain Woman, Wall Woman).

Train Man is brilliant and although I was sceptical to begin with and my lacklustre response to the first episode I stuck with it and was rewarded with a really engaging and satisfying story. It’s about a nerd who steps in to help a lady being harassed on the train and the subsequent relationship that develops with support from anonymous users on the famous 2channel Japanese message board.

Mountain Woman, Wall Woman was less interesting but it caught my attention solely because the actress from Train Man heavily featured and I had hoped it’d be as enjoyable as that series. Similarly I came across Kita Yoshio’s Tomorrows whilst looking at the filmography of Ryuhei Matsuda.

Ryuhei first came to my attention in his portrayal of a disillusioned school kid in the brilliant Blue Spring, a film that I can’t recommend enough. I’ve followed his work since first discovering him and have mostly enjoyed everything he’s been in, including 9 Souls and Gohatto. I’m not one to usually follow a specific actor but Ryuhei seems to lend himself to really interesting and unique projects. So when I noticed that he’d starred in a Japanese drama series on television I figured that it might be worthwhile trying to track it down.

I guess I’m a little disappointed to report that although the premise was certainly intriguing it didn’t quite live up to my expectations at all. It’s a show about a middle aged guy — down on his luck — who plans to commit suicide and the last few days leading up to that event. Just writing that has probably piqued your curiosity but sadly it never really takes off. Oh well, I must get back to my work now. See you later kids!
